| Old School Pictures | Kind of hard to believe it's been nearly 30 years since some of these were taken. |

1979 Me throwing the javelin in 1979. Not sure who took the picture, but I think it was someone on the high school's newspaper or yearbook staff. I got an 8x10 of it somehow that's been tumbing around my piles of stuff all these years. I started throwing the javelin in my freshman year of high school, spring of 1978, so I would have been a sophomore in this picture. I used to throw that thing endlessly in the big church yard across from our house, usually after track practice and before it got dark. Throw, chase it, bring it back, repeat. My best throw was in my senior year of high school ('81) at a meet down at Campus (Haysville) when for some unknown reason, I uncorked one for 187' 7". Although I qualified to go to state in the javelin that year, I never did unload another throw like that. |

1980 - Kansas State High School Track Meet This series of photos are some of the only ones I have of me running anything in high school. They are from the state track meet in 1980 when we fielded a team in the 4x800m relay. This was my second year running in that race, having been part of the same relay for NHS the previous year when I was a sophomore (we took 9th place with a time of 8:33.62). In 1980, we were geared up to try to win the race, coming off a win at our regional meet in 8:07.75 (a new school record!). We ran a pretty solid race with a time of 8:10.91, but that was only good enough for third place that year. I ran the lead leg, handing off to Evan Ice, who handed off to Clay Anderson, who gave it up to Rod Zook for the anchor leg. |

This is a shot of me running the leadoff leg in the 4x800 relay. This has to be the second lap as it is just past the start/finish line. Given the next photo, I'm going to guess that I was leading the race at this point, but as you will see, these guys were coming on hard.

Oh man, there I go getting passed. Yikes! I have a picture of me handing the baton off to Evan and we're in first place at that point, so being passed here wasn't that big of a deal. Only matters who makes it to the line first!

This is Clay Anderson starting off on the third leg of the race. I have no idea who was taking pictures, but their framing left a bit to be desired. (just kidding) :-) That's Evan Ice back there with the gold jersey and black shorts. Clay tragically died of an a brain aneurism a number of years later. I recently learned that our hometown is going to honor him by inducting him into the Newton High School Hall of Fame (Newton, Kansas). A much deserved honor. He was a good man and is missed by many. |

Another shot of Clay running the third leg. |

Here's a shot of Rod Zook running the anchor leg in the race. I'd guess this is on the first turn as everyone is sort of split into lanes here, probably because of the handoffs. You can see the Kapaun HIgh School guy in the blue (left side of pic). They won the race. |

A post-race shot of the team in the infield. Happy, but pretty tired as well. |

1980 A shot of me running the last stretch of our home cross country meet in the fall of 1980 at the Newton Public Golf Course. We were pretty sure we'd win this meet, but we only ran so-so and took second place to MacPherson, our league rivals that year. They beat us by like one single point, but we returned the favor later on at the state meet, beating them for third place in the team competition by that same one point. Someone on the NHS newspaper or yearbook staff took this shot. This is only half the pictures as I'm streaking down the home stretch with teammate Scott Jost. He got the other half of the picture as I recall. |
